Omaha Beach in Miniature
New! for 2010 at
D-Day Conneaut
D-Day
Conneaut is pleased to offer an inaugural portion of the program specifically
set aside for children. We look upon our event as means to honor and
educate and in doing so, we encourage your children to not only take in the
sights and sounds of D-Day, but also participate in it as well. For
children up to the age of 13, accompanied by their parent or guardian, we'd like
to extend an invitation to have your child color with crayons, cards and letters
as well as
outlined patriotic photos that will be handed to veterans during the event. Crayons
and paper stock will be provided free of charge. After filling out the
photos and/or cards, your child will then be able to help place a number of 2"
army men in a mini recreation of Omaha Beach.
Artwork from children 2 years old and up contributed to this
years gallery.
Wonderful job kids and thank you for remembering our veterans!
Tyler creating his own D-Day experience at the 2009 event.
Throughout the day on Saturday the invasion scene will be built in the volleyball
pit directly behind the the Naval Beach Battalion Bunker. We are
hoping to have at least 1000 soldiers in place by 4:40 PM. At that time
the finishing touch of adding water to the display will bring to life this
miniature world of the Longest Day. Mini landing craft will then head ashore
bringing reinforcements to the soldiers already at the waters edge. This
significant portion of our program is a tremendous opportunity for your child to
learn about teamwork, sacrifice, honor and pride.
Cameras are most welcomed as we transform the volleyball sand pit into a battlefield
as part of our continuing efforts
to commemorate the great deeds accomplished by the Greatest Generation. The letters and photos your children will color will help our
veterans feel like kids again. I personally can't wait to see their faces;
the young and young at heart.
The
brainchild behind this portion of our program is Tyler Root, a youngster from
Cleveland. He deserves all the credit for coming up with this wonderful
idea. Tyler and his mother Michelle along with members of our reenacting
community will help in assisting the recreation but we stress that you must
accompany your children during the activities of coloring and placing of the
soldiers. Again, bring your cameras for those lasting memories and at the end of the day, come
back at 4:40 to take photos of the completed scene. After just watching our
full scale recreation this display will be a special way to end your day at
D-Day Conneaut. With your help and that of your children we at D-Day
Conneaut hope to build this portion of our program bigger and bigger with each
passing year. As you know, the sand in the top hour glass for our
WWII Veterans is rapidly running out, so please take the time out of your day
at D-Day to help build this tribute to their service.
All in all, this should take about 10 minutes of your visit to D-Day Conneaut.
Although we will have plenty of 2" soldiers on hand, if your child would like to
bring and donate some from their own collection, well that would be just swell. After the
event we'll store them for use next year. At the end of the day, it is our
hope that your children will feel the spirit of patriotism within their hearts
as they too have helped in being a part of this great event. Truly a wonderful
experience for everyone.

Our First Annual Mini D-Day in 2010 - A place for learning and remembering.
Thank you for taking part in honoring our veterans.

And thank you Tyler for coming up with this wonderful idea.
The sandbox has plenty of room for thousands of soldiers.
So bring as many as you would like!
Toy soldiers brought from home will be your children's contribution
to honoring our Veteran's service. They cannot be returned.
